Treatment of Cellulitis

Cellulitis Treatment

Treatment Basics:

Antibiotics are the main treatment for cellulitis infections. Flucloxacillin or dicloxacillin is used to treat mild to moderate cellulitis, that results from a staph infection. In most cases, further treatment is not required.

  • Take antibiotics exactly as instructed, and always complete the prescription. Ending the antibiotics early leads to incomplete healing and promotes antibiotic resistance.
  • Keep well rested
  • Keep the infected area elevated above the heart as much as possible
  • Contact your doctor if the symptoms worsen or you notice symptoms like fatigue, fever, and chills that suggest a worsening of the infection

Are there any other treatments for cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a legitimate bacterial infection and needs to be responded to as such. Antibiotics are necessary to control the proliferation of bacteria. Cutting out dead tissue and elevating the infected area are things that can help to control the symptoms, but the main therapy will still revolve around antibiotics. In some cases, painkillers may be prescribed if there is pain associated.

If you are experiencing sharp pain, however, it is important to let your doctor know as it can point to a worsening of the infection, or another more dangerous infection.
